Berdahl To Board Of Directors FREMONT, Calif.-Jan. 24, 2001-Lam Research Corporation (Nasdaq: LRCX) today announced that Chancellor Robert M. Berdahl, chancellor of U.C. Berkeley, has been elected to serve as a member of Lam's Board of Directors. Berdahl's election is effective immediately.
Berdahl took office in 1997 as U.C. Berkeley's eighth chancellor. His focus has been on renewing the University's foundations of excellence and strengthening the campus community through a variety of new initiatives that address facilities, infrastructure, faculty, and student needs.

Bob has an outstanding administrative background and tremendous experience leading one of the most acclaimed universities for academic excellence in the world," said James W. Bagley, Lam's chairman and chief executive officer. "His close ties with industry leaders and government officials worldwide will be a significant benefit to Lam," Bagley concluded.
Berdahl came to U.C. Berkeley from the University of Texas at Austin (UT) where he had served as president since January 1993. As president of UT, Berdahl stressed undergraduate education, focusing on quality education and on university outreach to the communities, especially K-12 education in the cities. Before assuming his post at UT, Berdahl served as vice chancellor for Academic Affairs at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from 1986 to 1993.
Berdahl received his B.A. degree from Augustana College, Sioux Falls, South Dakota; M.A. degree from the University of Illinois; and Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota, as well as an honorary Doctorate of Science. He is the recipient of numerous honors and awards, a current member of the Association of American Universities, and the co-editor or author of two books and numerous articles.
