When our interns come to Lam, they join a community that loves to push the boundaries of what is possible. With opportunities to learn from world class engineers, design products that are architecting the future, and have some fun along the way, our interns have their hands full.

More than 150 interns joined our expert teams this summer at our sites across the globe and worked on projects that supported new product development and business operations. Get a taste of what it’s like to work at Lam Research through the lens of our interns.

What project(s) did you work on?
I worked on a predictive model, that may be implemented on Lam tools. This work required knowledge in statistics, machine learning, and hardware. So, for me, it’s quite fascinating to work on such a project where I can brainstorm ideas, try and fail in implementing different algorithms and approaches, work in data analytics, and data mining. I love to be challenged every day.

What was your favorite memory?
The employees around me are very cheerful. I love to explore different areas of interest with them and they love to share their own views.

What did you find to be some of the advantages of an intern position at Lam?
As an intern, it’s sometimes difficult to correlate your academics to practical field problems. As a student, I had the ability to bring what I’ve learned at school into the real world.

How was your work as an intern meaningful to your education?
Education shows you the path in which you can move forward, but in the practical field you gain the real experience. Education is certainly a prerequisite for the latter, but along the way those experiences will matter the most. I think in that way, my internship will help me in future endeavors.

What advice would you give future Lam interns?
Lam is a great place to start your journey. As an intern you will have time to read, implement your ideas and fail. But don’t worry about failing. By failing, only everybody on the team learns.

What project(s) did you work on?
I found the project I worked on very interesting due to the international nature of it. I learned a lot in international IT project management that focused on performance monitoring.

What was your favorite memory?
The international atmosphere at Lam Research has made me a different person, an international citizen. At lunch time, I meet different people from the world, and it feels like an international conference for me.

What did you find to be some of the advantages of an intern position at Lam?
What I discovered is that university studies were not enough to create a successful career. Adding an international practical experience in a multinational firm like Lam Research, made it whole.

How was your work as an intern meaningful to your education?
I have been studying intelligent maintenance and IoT in books with little to no application, but, in my stay at Lam Research, I can now apply the concepts I’ve learned to see the bigger picture.

What advice would you give future Lam interns?
Future intern should endeavor to always ask questions from seasoned colleagues. I would also recommend that they attend office social activities like the dragon boat tournament in Lake Ossiach, so they can have the possibility meet other colleagues from other departments.

What project(s) did you work on?
As part of my program management responsibilities, I loved observing our leadership development programs seeing firsthand the investment that Lam puts into developing employees.

Reflecting on your experience, what was your favorite memory?
My favorite memory was the amazing people you get to work with, the connections you form, and the opportunity to explore different projects (and go on offsites)!

What did you find to be some of the advantages of an intern position at Lam?
Since interns are only here for a few months, I felt like we got to experience so much within such little time. There was never a dull moment and I appreciated the balance between work and the intern activities.

How was your work as an intern meaningful to your education?
The different projects that I worked on allowed me to have a better understanding of where my professional interests lie and how I can leverage that going back to school.

What advice would you give future Lam interns?
Take advantage of resources at Lam (people, tools, training, opportunities) and make the most out of your time here!

What project(s) did you work on?
One of my favorite projects I worked on was identifying and solving a customer’s technical challenges. I was so excited that my manager and mentor gave me the opportunity to join the project. I gained technical insight and received hands-on engineering practice which filled my curiosity.

What was your favorite memory?
I really enjoyed the youthful and friendly environment at Lam. My colleagues were are all kind, patient, and willing to support me in areas that went beyond the scope of my learning. I had a really positive and meaningful experience here.

What did you find to be some of the advantages of an intern position at Lam?
As an intern, I had a chance to network with colleagues and gain insights on the latest technologies and trends within the industry. Employees here are kind, energetic, and willing to share personal and professional experiences that have made them successful. In dialoguing with them, I have gained valuable insight on career development and they have inspired me to think differently about the industry.

How was your work as an intern meaningful to your education?
My university has provided me with the foundation of theoretical knowledge and at Lam, I have been able to receive hands-on engineering experience and perspectives. I’m hungry to learn more and excited to keep learning and developing solutions to complex problems.

What advice would you give future Lam interns?
To future Lam interns, I would say be flexible and courageous. In my position, I did some tasks which were related to my colleague’s projects. She faced complex challenges in the etch process design and there were several root causes. I needed to remain flexible when focusing on one solution, as other solutions could appear once I began my experiments. Also, be courageous to ask questions! It is very helpful for interns to quickly get involved at Lam.

What project(s) did you work on?
Part of my work here involved helping outsource lab tests. I enjoyed this project because I worked closely with the third party lab’s head scientist and even led a training of the lab’s analysts on the testing methods Lam used. It was interesting to learn the various moving parts that go into supply chain management and quality control, and it was also nice to be given that much responsibility at my very first internship.

Reflecting on your experience, what was your favorite memory?
My favorite memory has to be meeting the other interns and not only learning about the things they did at work, but also hanging out with them after work. Having these colleagues that I call friends made Lam feel more like a home than a workplace.

What did you find to be some of the advantages of an intern position at Lam?
The exposure to such a large and impactful industry has to be the biggest advantage of an intern position at Lam. Not only do you get to participate in such an important step in the semiconductor industry, but through this internship, I got to attend SEMICON West in San Francisco where I was exposed to all the companies that comprise the semiconductor industry as well as their corresponding technologies. It was amazing to see all the semiconductor technology in person, and much of this I didn’t know even existed.

How was your work as an intern meaningful to your education?
This internship felt like more of a supplement to my education. At school, I learn the technical details of chemical engineering concepts, but at work, I have to apply those concepts to a broader context. The internship helped me learn many soft skills that I wouldn’t normally get in a classroom setting, and now I feel better prepared for a job in industry.

What advice would you give future Lam interns?
To future interns, I would say, attend all intern events because although you may have lots of work as an employee, you are still young and learning. Use this time to meet new people your age from varying backgrounds. Make new friends and keep these connections as you never know when they may be useful. Not only will this networking help you in the future, but it can make your time at Lam more enjoyable.

Corporate Communications Intern | Fremont, USA

What project(s) did you work on?
I really enjoyed working with web design. Coming in as a corporate communications intern, I expected to work a lot with social media and internal communications, so working with the internet and intranet sites was a great new experience to acquire.

What was your favorite memory?
My favorite memory was spending the day in San Francisco watching the Giants game with the other interns. It was really nice to be able to network with people I wouldn’t expect to get so close with. I was able to become friends with a lot of people from different schools, backgrounds, and career paths.

What did you find to be some of the advantages of an intern position at Lam?
I noticed that interns are very well integrated into the company. While we do enjoy some special intern events throughout the summer, I was still welcomed into meetings and had the same privileges and expectations as full time employees in my department.

How was your work as an intern meaningful to your education?
Working as a corporate communications intern helped me discover new strengths and grow my professional network. I was even able to refer back to some previous experiences during my undergraduate career that helped me with some projects throughout the summer.

What advice would you give future Lam interns?
Don’t be afraid to ask your manager to try new things within your department. Everyone I’ve come in contact with was very eager to help me out and accumulate new knowledge and experiences.
