On National STEM/STEAM Day, Lam marks its commitment to programs that inspire young people’s passion for math and science education.

In early October, we joined thousands of manufacturers across the U. S. celebrating National Manufacturing Day. Instead of an onsite visit this year, Lam invited over 100 students from Washington County, Oregon high schools to a virtual event to showcase the promise of modern manufacturing.

“Manufacturing is a more enticing field than I had previously believed,” said one student participant. “It’s a field that is exponentially expanding, with opportunities to travel all over the world to fix tools and get training.”

Employees provided insights into the semiconductor equipment manufacturing industry, shared their career journey, and gave students a peak into our operations by virtually watching a technician install a part into a tool. Since October 2014, Lam has been the presenting sponsor of Manufacturing Day for Washington County and has inspired bus-loads of students into manufacturing careers.

Silfex, a division of Lam, also got in on the fun with a virtual expo at Wright State University, which connected students to Ohio’s top manufacturing employers. Lead by Erin Clark, recruiting manager at Silfex, participating students had the opportunity to listen in on real-world manufacturing insight and learn about career pathways within the company.

In August, 20 young students took over our operations in Taiwan for Bring Our Children to Work Day, made possible by 26 employees. The all-day event included a variety of interactive sessions, including an executive greeting, educational talks, and hand-on activities such as the robotic and drone workshop.

“All my colleagues in the training center spent nearly two months using existing resources to figure out how to run this event, so that all children can operate and get results,” said Mark Lai, staff instructor at Taiwan’s training center.  He also expressed that the event offers children an opportunity to explore Lam’s culture and workplace, so they have a better understanding of what parents their parents do for work and have more in-depth interaction.

These community outreach efforts are in addition to our broader portfolio of initiatives outlined in our 2019 Corporate Social Responsibility Report.
