  • Li Fei Sun won for her paper on smart tools and ML solutions in semiconductor manufacturing
  • In the past four years, Lam engineers have won the top award three times

At Lam Research, we take pride in having the best and brightest engineers design products that shape the world. Our recent participation at the China Semiconductor Technology International Conference (CSTIC) gives us another reason to boast about our technical team members.

Driving the news: In mid-March, Li Fei Sun, field process engineer and five-year Lam veteran, won first prize in the Best Young Engineer Paper Awards at CSTIC.

  • Her winning paper, “Machine Learning Technologies for Semiconductor Manufacturing,” showcases how Lam’s SEMulator3D® and Equipment Intelligence® Data Analyzer (EI-DA) can accelerate research and development of next-generation microchips and help chipmakers more rapidly transition to high-volume manufacturing.

Why it matters: These awards are a testament to Lam’s strong technical capabilities and expertise in virtualization and advanced semiconductor technology. Additionally, they highlight Lam’s commitment to nurturing young engineers, and fostering an environment where they can grow and develop their careers. Together, these achievements reflect Lam’s dedication to establishing a strong workforce and presence in China—a country that contributed to 40% of our revenue in the December 2023 quarter.

Zoom out: Since 2020, Lam engineers have won this award a total of three times. QingPeng Wang, software application engineer, Semiverse™ Solutions, and five-year Lam veteran, previously secured the first prize twice, both in 2020 and 2021.

What it is: The Best Young Engineer Paper Awards celebrate exceptional scientific and engineering contributions by a young engineer within the fundamental or applied semiconductor industrial field.

What we're hearing:

  • "We are proud of our employee, Li Fei Sun, who was recently awarded the Best Young Engineer Paper Award at the 2024 SEMICON China CSTIC conference. I want to congratulate Li Fei, along with QingPeng Wang (winner of the 2020 and 2021 Best Young Engineer Paper Awards), for their success and industry recognition," says David Fried, corporate vice president of Semiverse Solutions at Lam. "Lam is proud of the amazing technical capabilities of our young engineers, and we recognize the valuable contributions they make to both Lam and to Lam’s customers. Their efforts and skills help our customers develop the latest semiconductor technologies and advance the entire semiconductor industry.”

  • “I am deeply honored and grateful to have received this award and recognition, and sincerely appreciate the support from my colleagues at Lam who contributed to the paper,” says Li Fei. “The award has inspired me to make even greater efforts in my work with both Lam and our customers.”

  • “I am very happy to have had my work recognized by the semiconductor industry at the CSTIC 2020 conference and was both pleased and surprised to receive the Best Young Engineer Paper award again during the 2021 conference,” says QingPeng. “Virtual process modeling and fabrication are linked to the future of the semiconductor industry. My process modeling work at Lam is not just my job—it's my mission.”
