Today is National Manufacturing Day in the United States, a day to celebrate the modern manufacturing industry and generate awareness about the abundance of employment and career opportunities it provides. As the fourth industrial revolution continues to transform our world, global demand for digital technologies – and the semiconductors that power them – is driving an ever-increasing need for skilled manufacturers.
For more than 40 years, Lam Research has been driving semiconductor breakthroughs that define the next generation of technology. From our manufacturing facilities, to the fabs of our customers, to the smart devices and technologies that power our world, our technologies ultimately touch the lives of nearly person on the planet.
Lam is committed to building the manufacturing workforce of the future through investments in university partnerships, internship and training programs, and community outreach:
- In the State of Oregon, Lam’s Global Operations team launched an internship program in partnership with Portland Community College (PCC) and Clackamas Community College (CCC), which provides associate degree students in the Microelectronics Technology program with the opportunity to gain industry experience over an 18-month period. Once interns have graduated from PCC or CCC and successfully completed the internship program, the intent is to hire them into manufacturing as fully qualified test technicians.
- In the State of Ohio, Silfex, a wholly owned subsidiary of Lam Research, partnered with Clark State Community College earlier this year to develop a 40-hour training program which gave students the skills needed for advanced manufacturing.
- Globally, Lam continues to invest in education and regional programs aimed at making a lasting impact in the communities we operate in. In 2020, Lam invested $1.3 million in education programs with non-profits, schools, and other education-related organizations to support students in building careers in STEM and manufacturing.
This National Manufacturing Day (and every day), we are filled with gratitude for the people that are keeping Lam’s manufacturing operations running each day – both here in the U.S. and in our facilities around the world – even in the face of the extraordinary circumstances and challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. As semiconductors are an essential part of our increasingly digital society, Lam’s manufacturing workforce is helping to keep the world moving and we couldn’t be prouder of them.

California, USA In Livermore, California, about a half hour drive from our global headquarters, lives a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility that produces Lam’s etch products. These advanced tools can selectively remove material at a scale more than 14,000 times smaller than the width of a human hair to create features and patterns on a semiconductor device. Lam is one of the San Francisco Bay Area’s largest manufacturers, providing employment opportunities for more than 5,000 people in the surrounding communities. |

Ohio, USA Silfex, a wholly owned subsidiary of Lam Research, is the world’s largest manufacturer of precision silicon and optical components for the semiconductor industry. The products manufactured in these facilities are critically important to global chip production. Across its two Ohio facilities, Silfex’s manufacturing workforce is comprised of more than 1,000 people in the communities of Eaton and Springfield. |

Oregon, USA Lam’s facilities in Tualatin, Oregon are home to our manufacturing centers for semiconductor deposition systems and photoresist strip products. More than 4,000 Oregonians work in manufacturing and other roles across this 52-acre site. In September 2021, we announced the opening of our newest manufacturing facility in the nearby community of Sherwood, which is expected to create approximately 300 additional jobs for area residents. Earlier this year, Lam Research was recognized by Forbes Magazine as one of America’s Best Employers in the State of Oregon. |

Gyeonggi, South Korea Our two manufacturing facilities in Korea produce our plasma bevel clean systems along with platforms and process modules for some of our etch and deposition product lines. Over the past ten years, Lam has created hundreds of jobs in the region. To encourage development of a diverse and equitable workforce at the site, we established an employee resource group dedicated to attracting, retaining and career development for South Korean women. In 2020, the South Korean Ministry of Gender Equality and Family recognized Lam Research as a Family-Friendly Company, and we were also honored to receive the 2020 Excellence and Innovation in the Workplace Award from South Korea’s Minister of Employment and Labor. |

Penang, Malaysia Opened in August 2021, our new state-of-the-art facility in Penang, Malaysia is now Lam’s largest manufacturing site, with more than 800,000 square feet of expansions already planned to serve the current and future needs of our customers, the world’s leading chipmakers. The facility is on-track to create more than 600 jobs and career opportunities for Malaysian residents by the end of the year. |

Villach, Austria Nestled among the mountains, lakes, and natural mineral springs, the city of Villach, Austria is home to Lam’s spin clean systems facility, which houses a team of more than 500 employees in manufacturing and other roles. The team recently celebrated a major milestone: shipping its 10,000th single wafer clean chamber. In 2020, Lam Research Austria was recognized by ÖGK BGF-Gütesiegel with a BGF Seal of Approval a third time. The BGF Seal is awarded to companies that go above and beyond to support the health and wellbeing of their employees. |

Taoyuan, Taiwan Our manufacturing facility in Taiwan is operated by Talus Manufacturing, a wholly owned subsidiary of Lam Research. In addition to specializing in the Since it was first established in 2016, Talus’s workforce has grown by 15x. |
